Tennessee Air Force Base - The 118th Wing (118 WG) is a unit of the Tennessee Air National Guard located at Joint Base Berry Field (formerly Berry Field Air National Guard Base).

The 105th Tactical Airlift Squadron, assigned to the Wing's 118th Operations Group, was a derivative of the World War I 105th Air Squadron, established on 27 August 1917. One of the 29 original National Guard Observation Squadrons of the United States Army National Guard formed before World War II.

The mission of the 184th Wing's MQ-9 Reaper remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) is to provide close air support (CAS), air diction, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) and strike to eliminate threats. The multi-role capabilities of these RPAs extend combat search and rescue operations and targeting time for target acquisition, tracking, targeting, attack and assessment.
There are also plans to acquire the 118th Division's Cyber Security Division to expand its intelligence force.
Constituted 8 December 1942 at Westoverfield, Massachusetts as the 356th Fighter Group, armed with P-47 Thunderbolts. Deployed to the European Theater of Operations (ETO) and assigned to the 8th Air Force in the field. She remained on combat duty until May 1945. Reorganized in 1946 as the 118th Fighter Wing of the Tennessee Air National Guard, it received a federal charter and became operational on 2 October 1947. Set in Berryfield, Nashville. The new group was initially assigned to the 54th Fighter Wing of the 4th Air Force. It is home to the 105th Fighter Squadron and 155th Fighter Squadron at Memphis Municipal Airport. On 1 September 1950 the group was promoted to wing level and activated as the 118th General Wing. The aircraft was assigned to the Continental Air Command, 4th Air Force, with Air Wing Headquarters at Berry Field. The 118th Fighter Wing was renamed the 118th General Wing and merged with the 105th Fighter Squadron into the 118th General Wing. On 1 February 1951, the 118th Composite Wing, 118th Composite Group, and 105th Fighter Squadron were redesignated the 118th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing, Group, and Squadron, respectively.
The 118th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing (TRW) and Group entered service with the Federal Army on 1 February 1951. Memphis, Tennessee. On 3 August 1951, the 118th TRW was released from its TAC assignment, reassigned, and transferred to 9th Air Force Headquarters at Shaw Air Force Base. The 105th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron is based at Berryfield. It was redesignated Fighter-Interceptor Squadron 105 and activated at that location on 1 March 1951. Detachment 1 is a P-47 Thunderbolt aircraft flying out of McGee-Tyson Airport in Knoxville, Tennessee, providing air cover for the Atomic Energy Commission at Oak Ridge.
On 1 January 1953, the 118th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing returned to Buryfield with the following assigned units: the 1953 to 1954 RF-51 Mustang, the 1954 to 1956 Lockheed RF-80C Shooting Star, and the 1956 to early 1961 Republic RF-84F Thunderflash.
Tennessee Air National Guard
In April 1961, the wing transitioned to airlift duty flying C-97G stratofloaters. On 12 May 1961, the 118th Air Transport Wing (Heavy) Eastern Transport Air Force (EASTAF), was reassigned to the Military Air Transport Service (MATS). In January 1966, MATS merged with the Military Airlift Command (MAC). As a result, the 118th Airlift Wing, Group and Squadron was redesignated the 118th Military Airlift Wing, Group and Squadron. The 118th MAW converted to C-124C Globemaster II transports and received one of the eight aircraft on 6 April 1967.
Operating out of Nashville during the Vietnam War, the 118th MAW supported the global airlift needs of the US military. The wing became the executive agent of ANG airlift support for the Vietnam effort in 1965. A team of highly trained officers and Air Force personnel at Berry Field is manned 24 hours a week, 7 days a week. 18 military airlift groups in 15 states. Beginning in December 1965, the 105th MAS flew more than 100 missions into South Vietnam in about a year and a half.
In March 1971, the wing converted to C-130A Hercules aircraft and became the 118th Tactical Airlift Wing. The unit was assigned to the 9th Air Force, Tactical Air Force. Finally, by 9 June 1973, five ANG tactical airlift groups were assigned to the wing. 118th TAG in Nashville. On 1 December 1974, the 118th Tactical Airlift Wing was transferred from the 9th Air Force's Tactical Air Forces (TAC) to the 21st Air Force's Military Airlift Command (MAC). On 9 February 1975, the 118th Tactical Airlift Wing was disestablished and its World War II lineage and history transferred to the 118th Tactical Airlift Wing. In June 1978, the wing received the Air Force's Outstanding Unit Award for its service. In 1979 the wing was expanded from eight to six C-130A aircraft.
Since acquiring the C-130 airframe, the unit has supported global tactical airlift missions. Participation in exercises such as Brave Shield, Brim Frost and Red Flag took place in the oldest aircraft in stock (models from 1954 to 1957). Since 1977, turning to Panama has become routine in support of Volant Oak.

During 21 deployments for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in Southwest Asia, the wing flew a record 7,239 flight hours, amassing 462 personnel. In 1992, the Military Airlift Command (MAC) was reorganized as the Air Mobility Command (AMC). As part of this reorganization, the 118th Tactical Airlift Wing became the 118th Airlift Wing. With six C-130H aircraft and 1,406 personnel based in Nashville, the 118th Airlift Wing was one of the largest Air Force units in the Air National Guard at the time.
After 11 September 2001, the pace of operations increased. More than a third of the Air Wing is active for a year in support of the Homeland Security Program (Operation Noble Eagle). This includes deploying aircraft and crews to bases in the United States for several months and assigning a home station warning mission. Shortly after the wing completed its Noble Eagle mission, the wing was selected to deploy to Southwest Asia in support of Operation CTCOM.
In 2003, the 118th's C-130s and 320 personnel deployed to the Middle East in direct support of combat operations at the start of Operation Iraqi Freedom. During the desert heat and sandstorms, Soldiers and Soldiers of the 118th supported combat operations in and outside of Baghdad and surrounding areas of Iraq. The lead wing in establishing a bare base supporting the largest C-130 force in 118th Wing history, with more than 46 C-130s at a single base in a combat environment. The unit supported CTCOM at various locations in Iraq, Kuwait, Oman and Saudi Arabia. The unit returned home at different times in late 2003 and was rotated as US forces withdrew to meet changing demands. In late 2003, the wing again deployed to Uzbekistan to support Afghanistan's Age of Freedom operations.
As part of BRAC 2005, the Department of Defense recommended reorganizing Berryfield Air National Guard Base. The recommendation calls for the transfer of the 118th Airlift Wing's C-130H aircraft to the Illinois Air National Guard's 182nd Air National Guard (four aircraft) at Greater Peoria Airport Air National Guard Base, Illinois, and to the 123rd Airlift Wing. Cuttack Air National Aviation. distributed among groups. Guards (4 aircraft) at Louisville IAP Air National Guard Base, Kentucky. Flight-related ECS (airports and firefighting personnel) will move to Memphis Air National Guard Base, and the Nashville Air Medical Squadron will move to NAS JRB in Fort Worth, Texas. The other ECS remains in Nashville. Nashville has a low military value ranking and is close to other ANG bases that maintain or purchase aircraft.
